Enbridge’s Algonquin Gas Transmission (AGT) interstate pipeline, aside from already completed recent expansions, has also recently started up its latest project in southeastern Mass and into Rhode Island.
Enbridge’s AGT Enhancement Project(also known as R.A.R.E. – Reliable, Affordable, Resilient Enhancement), is a proposed expansion of their existing AGT interstate gas transmission pipeline system.
The AGT Enhancement adds 75 MMcf/d capacity to the existing AGT pipeline system, on both the mainline and the G lateral, with several projects:
– “G-1” : On the G Lateral from its start in Mendon through Bellingham, Franklin and Wrentham in MA into Cumberland, RI they will “lift and lay” (aka T&R = take-up and relay) the existing 16” diameter pipeline to replace with new 36” pipe.
– “Mainline” : In Burrillville RI they will add new 36” looping pipeline alongside the existing pipe heading from the compressor station northeast towards MA.
– “G-2” : In Tiverton and Little Compton RI they will add 12” looping pipeline to connect with their recent Sakonnet River Replacement expansion project.
– “Cromwell Station” – In Cromwell CT they will increase horsepower at the existing compressor station through a software upgrade.
• Surveying: Starting in late fall 2025, Enbridge started approaching landowners for permission to survey their properties for the project. They plan to start surveys in March.
You have the right to deny permission for them to enter your property. If you’ve already signed permission forms, you can send them notice to rescind permission. » Learn more.
• Informational Open House: Starting in April and maybe into May 2026 Enbridge will host public meetings to share project details, answer questions, and gather feedback from residents and stakeholders:
- Cumberland – April 27, 4:30 to 6:30 pm: The Lodge at Diamond Hill, 4097 Diamond Hill Rd, Cumberland, RI
- Burrillville – April 28, 4:30 to 6:30 pm: Crystal Lake Golf Club, 100 Broncos Hwy, Mapleville, RI
- Little Compton – April 30, 4:30 to 6:30 pm: Little Compton Community Center, 34 Commons St., Little Compton, RI
There are also three environmental group organized public info sessions planned for Rhode Island communities in March. See our events page for times, dates, locations.

AGT announced local gas distribution company (LDC) customers for this project.
Eversource has been approved as shippers on AGT-E by the MA Dept. of Public Utilities for two 10-year gas contracts for both NSTAR Gas and Eversource Gas of Massachusetts.

Zoom in for a detailed view of this gas transmission system’s path. We cannot map the potential impact radius of the new pipelines until AGT formally files the intended operating pressures with FERC later this year.
Project Maple & un-named AGT expansions
This call for expansions along the AGT system only officially exsisted as an Open Season bid for customers. Enbridge never filed a project under this name, but did get a few small expansions approved by FERC under expedited “blanket authority” approval.
